Going once, Going twice....

Values Auction

Today we had a values auction in class. It was a success. Students had $1000 to bid on 25 different items, ranging from a dream house to a pill that can cure world hunger. Bidding was fast and most items sold.

I had a great time. The best part of the lesson was when one student didn't have enough money to bid on the item that she wanted, and a group of students teamed up to pool their money together and purchase the items. - What does this say about you as a group!?
We ran out of time because the activity was so exciting and as a result we didn't get a chance to debrief.
Again, today was a successful advisory and I enjoyed the lesson as much if not more than all of the advisees.

Reflect on the blog as a comment if you get a chance-

  • What did you bid on and why did you choose to bid on those items?
  • What do these choices say about your values?
  • How were you able to buy certain items? (teamwork, save up....)
  • How do you think the choices you make now will affect your setting of life goals?

hi, its me eleni!!! i really love this auction value activity. not only is it fun its way for us to learn from our actions. i bidded for the dream house of my own anywhere in the world, and now that im thinkin about it i should've bidded 4 world peace thing 4 10 years, because now i sound like im selfish nd that i dont care bout the people around me, but i really do care about everyone. actually our actions in our class with this bid may affect our setting of our life goals, because with this auction we showed how much we care bout the world nd how much we care bout ourselves. but eventhough i bidded for the dream house im not selfish like i said b4.

Hi it's Tiffany, this activity was fun. We should play it again some time, but maybe next time with all of the advisorys so then it would be more fun and competitive. Well that's all I had to say.....

This lesson was not meant to make you feel bad. It is just a reflection on the choices you make. If you do not like the choices you make, then change them. There was not one item on that list that could hurt people, and there were no "bad choices." It was intended as a reflection activity and if it caused you to think about how your choices affect you and others, then it was a success!

that student was meeeee =]

i had soo much fun doing this activity the other day during advisory... i bid on houses for abused children, i chose it because that is something that would make other people happy and me, and i can't see people especially kids suffering, i am a very giving and caring person. I saved up all my money so i can buy the houses, but my competion had more money then me because her partner gave it to her, so in the end some students ending up giving me money and i had enought, but in the end everyone got part of the houses. I think the choices we make now, will reflect later on, how we are and act as an adult. i can definitly see myself as a person who would do anything to make other people happy that have been through abuse in there life.

It's Vickie
although i've liked our advisory in the past we've never been the most organized or enthusiastic, i think this year we are going to change. i had a lot of fun doing the values activity. the first thing that jumped out at me was having a maid clean your room for a year. I hate cleaning my room and to have a year of complete organization would be wonderful. It was interesting to see what was so important to some people was not important to others.
