Advisory Fairness

This afternoon an activity that was originally intended to take only a few minutes transformed into a passionate class discussion of peers offering warm and cool feedback as well as suggestions for next time. -----Advisory Fairness.

Every student was involved in active discussion or observation and reflection. Students developed excellent action plans that related to the student needs and the reason for referral.
The Advisory committee had just enough time to finish, but we did not get a chance for reflection.

Post your reflection of the experience:
What is your reaction to Advisory Fairness?
What are some questions you still have?
Who does Advisory Fairness help?

We also had fairness and I must admit I was impressed with my students ability to see through the emotional aspect of the situation and reflect on the actions of the student and teacher.

It was revealing.

Everyone worked together to figure out a good idea for the student who was late to class and we found out at the end that it was a fake one. That was fun and it is a better then just giving a detention.
I like the advisory fairness and it will help students

i thought the advisory fairness went well. we all were able to colaborate and come to an agreement over what should be done. advisory fairness helps everyone in a way because it teaches us all about consequences.

i especially loved faking the class out in the beginning :D

In our class everyone worked together. At first the problem was that a student was late to class, but it ended up being fake. The other case was that a student went downstairs to get a drink. Everyone got involed and giving out ideas.

i think that this was really good activity because we all had a voice in the fairness court, because we are able to go both in the teacher's and the student's shoes to see how to punish that specific student.

Eleni, I agree that we have a chance to see both sides of the situation and this makes for a more complete discussion. Collaboration (great word choice Valerie) helps to determine the best course of action while giving an understanding why the action was initiated.

Valerie,
The idea of fairness will not only give "fair" consequences, but I hope that over time it will reduce the occurrences because students will be aware of what can be done next time.
Not only will students learn from their mistakes, but they have the opportunity to learn from the mistakes of others.
